Victor Papilian s-a făcut cunoscut ca romancier, nuvelist, dramaturg, om de teatru, conducător de publicații literare, animator al vieții artistice clujene în calitate de director al Teatrului Național, al Operei Române și al Societății Scriitorilor Români din Ardeal și Banat. A fost un spirit prodigios, autor insațiabil, de la care ne-a rămas o bogată colecție de scrieri inedite, dintre care încercăm să dăm la lumină doar o mică parte din nuvelistică, publicistică (conferințe) și dramaturgie. An editorial project published under the auspices of the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, and dedicated to the Great Union Centennial

A doctor, a scientist, a short fiction writer, a novelist, a journalist, an intellectual occupying the most honourable public functions, such as Head of the Writer’s Association in Transylvania and Banat and Director of the Cluj Opera and Theatre, Victor Papilian was equally a prodigious and well-known playwright. Since 1927, the year when his first play Celui ce n‑are i se va lua [From him who has not, even what he has will be taken away] was performed without being published, and Un optimist incorigibil [An Incorrigible Optimist], 1934, which was his first published play, Victor Papilian continued to produce one after the other a variety of plays, some more successful and others rather experimental. Among the plays published during his lifetime we find Cerurile spun [As told by the skies], subtitled “a Christian Orthodox mistery” (Sibiu, 1934), Nocturnă [Nocturne] (Cluj, 1934), Alt glas [Another Voice] (Oradea, 1936), A trecut… [It Has Passed…] (Oradea, 1936), and, from those that existed only in manuscript form, four were included in a Theatre volume that C. Cubleșan put together in 1975: Simona sau prințul consort [Simona or The Prince Consort], A trecut [It Has Passed], Autorul huiduit [The Booed Author] and Biserica din slăvi [The Hallowed Church]. A considerable number of plays still remain in a manuscript form, some that are absolutely experimental like Tortul de ciocolată sau Prea multă minte strică [The Chocolate Cake or It’s not wise being too wise] (a comedy in 4 acts), Orișicum, tinerețea e simpatică [Anyhow, Youth is Funny], (a student farce) or Mizilul de altădată [The Mizil of Yore] (a sentimental comedy), as well as other four plays written at different times, mostly after 1946 or between 1952 and 1956, in the last part of his life. Four of them were made available to us in 1996, through Aurelia Bunea’s manuscript donation: Regie [Directing], Maestrul [The Master], Tu es Petrus and Ioana d’Arc sau Crinul de aur la Sf. Mormânt [Joan of Arc or The Golden Lily at the Holy Sepulchre]. This are the plays contained in the present volume.
Victor Papilian’s work as a playwright can be equally supplemented by the personal references he offers in his memoir, Amintiri din teatru [Memories from the Theatre], published in 1968, to which can be added a second text from the manuscripts which we published in 1988 in the prose volume Lacrima [The Tear]. Furthermore, the numerous lectures he gave at the Studio Theatre in Cluj can provide a more comprehensive picture of Victor Papilian’s preoccupation with the development and the advancement of the Romanian theatre.
